Solution Video

Student Perspective

Students perceive that solution videos are helpful for intermittent information.

“Students indicated that the videos were very helpful throughout the semester as they needed intermittent information. But as they went to study for the final exam to watch a significant quantity of videos was unrealistic.”

Students feel that they don’t have time to watch the whole solution.

“They said that instead of watching homework solutions, they just look at the blog comments because they don’t have time to watch the whole solution. That could be because they’re posted in large batches.”

Instructor Perspective

Solution videos are better for students than in PDF formats.

We’ve had feedback from students that they want some of the resources in PDFs instead of just videos because they could process PDFs faster. We decide not to provide such resources because just looking through solutions gives them a false sense of confidence whereas watching a video forces them to think through the process more.

“The primary focus of their argument was, if I’m looking at this question that I just want to make sure I know how to do it. For instance, on the homework. I’d like to make sure I did this one component correctly. They wanted to be able to look at the solution and confirm that rather than looking through a video.”

Solution videos help instructor save time during class.

“The nice thing about the Freeform was that the students were able to work until the end of class without me having to stop to provide the solution because the solution is available online.”

“[when I don’t have time to finish the problems] I encourage them, ‘If you would like to see how this is finished from an algebraic standpoint, go to the video.’ But I think that tool I only used when I’m nearing the end of the particular topic.”
